Thanks to the new Intel® X25-M (Mainstream 2.5") and X18-M (1.8") Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives (SSDs), a new level of performance and reliability is available for notebook, desktop PC, and workstation storage. Depending on your particular usage patterns, the X25-M may also work fine as a server solution for you. The new Intel® X25-E (Enterprise version) will also certainly meet the demands of your storage requirements if the X25-M is not quite potent enough for you.
We are using the X25M currently, and are quite impressed with it as a server solution for our own virtualization servers using VMware ESXi. One very successful and incredibly fast 1U, high-efficiency, low-power server solution we custom built for a client included an array of these Intel 2.5-inch SSDs coupled an Adaptec harware RAID solution, dual low-power 54xx Xeon processors, and low-voltage RAM. This combination resulted in one of the most powerful computing performance-per-watt solutions possible.
In addition, we have implemented the Intel X25-M SSD storage in some of our workstations and software-development desktops with great success and incredible performance gains. We saw INCREDIBLE RESULTS with the Intel SSD delivering MASSIVE SPEED IMPROVEMENTS for every operation tested. Although our tests were limited, the speed-improvement trend was quickly apparent in everything we tried. In general, execution/load times when using the Intel SSD device were reduced by 50-80% as compared to the other devices [i.e., Local SATA Hard-Drives and/or RAID Network Storage over Gigabit Ethernet].

Again, our ability to deliver highly-optimized multi-processor servers and computers equipped with high-speed SAS/SATA/SSD/RAID storage, allows us to tailor hardware to meet the demanding needs of SQL-Server and software development. We have tested various software application performance, including virtual machine performance (bare iron and hosted) with these new Intel SSD units, and the performance is utterly stunning!
